Youngsters and adults

Pack for basic to intermediate level 

Student profile: youngsters and adults with some previous experience with the aim of consolidating and expanding basic concepts.

Starting point: Maite will guide you to the right stage within the program after a free 30-minute introductory lesson.

  

Stage 1 

Duration: 3 months.

Frequency: 1 class per week.

Student skills: stage 1 is aimed at students who typically are comfortable with the following: (a) holding the bow straight, (b) holding the violin without tension.

 

Objectives 

✧ The high third finger groove.

✧ The low first finger.

✧ Bowing with a free-flowing wrist.

✧ Speed it up with eighths & sixteenths.

✧ Your introduction to the world of violin etudes.

✧ String changes.

✧ Three-note slurs across strings.

 

Exercises 

✧ A major scale: two octaves, two ways.

✧ Some wrist bowing vibrations.

✧ An F major scale.

✧ Two etudes: one in eighths, one in sixteenths.

✧ Chant du Soir by Köhler.

✧ Violin Music by Lenkei.

✧ Easy Pieces op. 22 by Elgar.

  

Stage 2 

Duration: 3 months.

Frequency: 1 class per week.

Student skills: stage 2 is aimed at students who typically are comfortable with the following: (a) good tuning in the first position, (b) flexible movement with the bow.

 

Objectives 

✧ Scales in half position.

✧ Bow push-ups.

✧ Martelé bowing: solo and with scales.

✧ Combining martelé with slurs.

✧ Fingers that move faster and more precisely.

✧ Fast runs.

 

Exercises 

✧ B flat major scale: played two ways.

✧ Some exercises to improve your skills.

✧ Ode to Joy but with martelé.

✧ Song Without Words 8 by Rehfeld.

✧ Concerto D Major by Küchler.

  

Stage 3 

Duration: 3 months.

Frequency: 1 class per week.

Student skills: stage 3 is aimed at students who typically are comfortable with the following: (a) ability to generate speed with the bow, (b) proper arm weight on the bow.

 

Objectives 

✧ Use the low fourth and first fingers.

✧ Separating legato bow strokes.

✧ Integrating finger movements into bow changes.

✧ Quick martelé bow strokes.

✧ Amplifying finger motion and power across strings.

✧ Diving into music dynamics.

✧ Integrating everything into a piece.

 

Exercises 

✧ B flat major arpeggio and G harmonic minor scale.

✧ Some exercises to keep these skills sharp.

✧ Musette by Bach.

✧ Snakes & Ladders from Stepping Stones by Katherine and Hugh Colledge.

 

Stage 4 

Duration: 3 months.

Frequency: 1 class per week.

Student skills: stage 4 is aimed at students who typically are comfortable with the following: (a) good intonation and sound production, (b) no thumb tension in the violin.

 

Objectives 

✧ Your introduction to the chromatic scale.

✧ Upbow and downbow staccato moves.

✧ Double stops: fingers & open strings together.

✧ Vibrato basics.

✧ Diving deeper into musical dynamics.

✧ Dynamics in a classical melody.

 

Exercises

✧ Chromatic scale exercises.

✧ Staccato exercises.

✧ A piece by Bach.

✧ A piece by Mozart.
