Adult violin learners often have more material than clarity. You may have scales, exercises, pieces, notes from a lesson, saved videos and several technical problems competing for the same practice time.
The difficulty is not always knowing what you could practise. It is deciding what should come next.
I do not begin by asking which weakness is biggest in general. I look for one observable relationship that may change the musical result in front of us. Then I choose a proportionate way to work on it: independently, through a structured sequence of foundations, with a focused assessment or with regular feedback.
This is not a universal algorithm. It is a practical way to replace a broad judgement with a useful next question.
Why broad practice goals are difficult to use
“Work on intonation”, “improve my bowing” and “practise the difficult part” may all describe genuine needs. But they do not yet tell you what to do.
The same symptom can arise under different conditions. A rough sound may involve bow speed, contact point or the preparation of a direction change. A difficult passage may fail because of its rhythm rather than the notes that first attract your attention. If the goal remains broad, it becomes easy to repeat familiar exercises without knowing what they should change.
The next priority should be narrow enough to test and meaningful enough to reconnect to the music.
1. Name the symptom
Begin with what you can hear, see or experience. Do not worry yet about explaining the cause.
For example:
- the sound becomes rough;
- the pulse becomes uneven;
- one note is repeatedly sharp;
- the hand tightens during a shift;
- the phrase loses direction;
- a passage works slowly but breaks down faster.
These are symptoms, not diagnoses. “My bow technique is bad” turns a local result into a judgement about your playing. “The sound becomes rough” leaves room to investigate.
Choose one symptom for the session. If several appear together, begin with the earliest one you can identify or the one that most disrupts the musical result. It may not be the root cause, and you do not need to claim that it is. It is simply a sensible place to start observing.
2. Turn the symptom into an observation
Now make the description more precise. Ask:
- Where does it happen?
- When does it begin?
- What comes immediately before it?
- Does it appear at every tempo or only under one condition?
- Does it remain when I simplify another part of the task?
Compare these two descriptions:
My bowing sounds bad.
and:
The sound becomes rough near the frog when I change from a down-bow to an up-bow in the second bar.
The second description does not yet prove why the sound changes. It gives you a location, an action and a result to compare.
Or compare:
I cannot play this passage fast.
with:
When I increase the tempo, the bow begins moving to the new string after the third finger has already played.
This observation suggests a coordination question. It can now be tested in a short fragment containing the preparation, the crossing and the note that follows it. A recording may reveal details that are difficult to judge while playing. Treat it as evidence from one attempt, not an objective technical diagnosis.
3. Choose one priority and one test
A priority is not simply the exercise you plan to use. It is the relationship you want to understand or alter.
For the rough bow change, the priority might be the preparation of the change near the frog. For the unstable passage, it might be the timing between the finger and the string crossing. For a phrase that stops at a shift, it might be connecting the arrival note to what follows rather than landing on that note in isolation.
Next, decide how you will know whether your adjustment changes the result.
A useful test has three parts:
- Play a short sample and notice the current result.
- Change one relevant variable.
- Repeat the sample and compare, then place it back in context.
You might prepare the bow level earlier, alter the amount of bow, clarify the rhythm away from the instrument, or include the notes around a shift. The right variable depends on the observation.
If the result changes, keep testing whether the adjustment survives in the phrase. If nothing changes, do not repeat the same explanation indefinitely. The variable may be irrelevant, the fragment may exclude the real transition, or the symptom may need informed observation.
Isolating one variable can make comparison clearer, but violin playing depends on relationships. The priority must eventually return to the music.
A complete example: from confusion to a next step
Suppose you finish a passage thinking that both intonation and bowing are unreliable. That is too large for one practice decision. Apply the sequence:
Symptom: The final note of the shift is often sharp, and the sound is interrupted.
Observation: The hand arrives on the note, but the bow slows before the shift and the following note starts late.
Priority: Keep the rhythm and bow continuity through the arrival and the next note.
Test: Play the three-note unit once, clarify its rhythm, adjust the bow distribution and compare. Then include the preceding and following bars.
The pitch may become more stable when the rhythm and bow remain organised—or remain the main issue. One comparison does not prove a cause; it reduces uncertainty and improves the next question.
4. Choose the proportionate route
Once you have a priority, ask what level of structure or feedback the question requires. More support is not automatically better. The route should match the problem.
Continue independently when the question is clear
If you can describe the symptom, choose a relevant variable and compare the result, continue the cycle. Record where you will begin next time.

Rebuild a sequence when the foundations are disordered
Sometimes the difficulty is not one passage. The same uncertainty appears across basic rhythm, bow use, left-hand organisation and simple repertoire, and you do not know which foundation should precede another.

Seek a focused assessment when the main obstacle is unclear
If several symptoms occur together and repeated tests do not identify the most useful starting point, a Diagnosis Session can provide a focused assessment. Choose regular guidance when the work needs continuing feedback
If you need continuing feedback and adjustment across repertoire and technique, regular study may fit better. Know when this is not a practice-planning question
Do not use this method to diagnose pain, persistent physical discomfort or a possible injury. Stop playing and seek an appropriately qualified health professional when the concern is physical.
Likewise, an unstable fitting, damaged string, slipping peg, unusual buzz or structural concern may require a qualified luthier or workshop. A new practice priority cannot correct an instrument problem.
The same boundary applies to online tools. A short quiz can help you choose among learning routes, but it cannot identify the technical or medical cause of a playing problem.
Common ways the next priority becomes distorted
Before deciding, check that you are not automatically:
- choosing the hardest passage because it feels most serious;
- treating every symptom as a separate problem;
- trying to repair all fundamentals before making music;
- assuming the first visible mistake must be the cause;
- changing several variables and then being unable to tell what mattered.
None of these choices is always wrong. The problem is using them without a question or comparison.
Leave the next session a clear starting point
At the end of practice, write four short lines:
- Symptom: What did I hear or experience?
- Observation: Where and under what condition did it appear?
- Priority and test: What did I change, and what happened?
- Next step: What will I begin with next time?
Your note might read:
The rhythm contracts before the string crossing. It begins on the note before the crossing when I play faster. Next time I will compare the three-note group with an earlier bow-level preparation, then return it to the phrase.
This need not become a detailed journal. It lets the next session begin with evidence rather than a vague memory.
Clarity comes before quantity
Knowing what to practise next does not require a complete diagnosis of your playing. It requires a sufficiently precise observation, one relevant priority and a test that can change your understanding.
Name the symptom. Locate it. Change one variable and compare. Then decide whether the next step is independent work, a structured sequence, a focused assessment or regular guidance.
You do not need to solve the whole violin in one session. You need a next question that is small enough to investigate and important enough to matter inside the music.

The cited studies support planning, monitoring and reflection as relevant dimensions of music practice. They do not validate PN12’s four-part decision tool as an algorithm, prove that the first visible symptom is the root cause or authorise the quiz to diagnose technical, medical or instrument problems.
- Hallam (2001), The development of metacognition in musicians: Implications for education — Twenty-two professionals and fifty-five novices support the relevance of planning, monitoring and evaluation, while the substantial individual variation argues against one universal practice priority. The study does not validate PN12’s four-step method or establish outcomes for adult violin learners.
- Araújo et al. (2024), Metacognition in musical practices: two studies with professional and beginner musicians — The study included five professional brass musicians and three beginner university violin students. It supports the relevance of task organisation, planning, execution and evaluation, but the beginner sample is too small to establish a general decision formula.
- Kabrick & Duffin (2025), Testing a Framework for Teaching Self-Regulation Skills in Private Violin Instruction — A five-step self-regulation framework was tested with two violin students in weekly private lessons over four weeks. It suggests potential value in observation and adjustment, but does not validate PN12’s sequence or support broad causal claims.
- Suzuki, Wolf & Ginsborg (2026), Development and Validation of the Self-Regulated Learning in Music Practice Self-Report Scale — A 27-item scale was developed and tested with 290 musicians, supporting planning, execution and reflection as measurable dimensions of self-regulated music practice. This was a validation and association study, not an intervention proving that PN12’s method improves playing.
